IT session using powerpoint.

In our last Thursday morning session for IT, we used powerpoint. Our powerpoint was to be a book review. I chose to do a book review on Twilight (the first book in the series by Stephenie Meyer). We got a chance to use the powerpoint, and experiment with all of the different tools. We were shown how to add animation, sound, and much more. This session allowed us to get creative and experiment with the tools available. This session was very useful as now the class is now aware of how to use microsoft powerpoint successfullyto produce a good powerpoint

I look foward to the next session we are working on powerpoint

Group work on constructivism

Last week after the mass session we had, we went into one of the technology suites in Otakaro. In this suite their were clusters of computers. At each table there were three computers and each computer could fit three people. In our groups we worked on our Wikis that we had started in a previous lesson. Our Wiki was about constructivism and had to include the following:
- A defintion of construcivism.
- The advantages of constructivism.
- The disadvantages of constructivism.
- Differences between traditional and constructivist teaching.
Once we had completed each of these and had sufficient information, we then peer assessed. We shifted to another table and had to mark another groups' Wiki, based on how developed it was. This was a great chance to see other groups' Wikis and to get some peer feedback on our own.

Experimenting with Inspiration, a programme which will be useful for in the classroom for any curriculum area.

I have enjoyed the IT course so far this semester. In the smaller breakout groups we have worked in small group to complete the set tasks each session. During the first session we created a photostory and in the second session we made a short movie. Neither of these things I had done before, so I really enjoyed participating in this.

The first session we made a photo story. This task required us to explore the campus and take photographs in relation to poems that we had written just beforehand. Once we had done this we used a program called Photostory to import the pictures. From here we decided which photographs we wanted to keep and which we did not. We were then shown how to put them into the order that we wanted for our photostory. We were also shown various editing tools. There was a wide vatiety of things that we could have done to edit our photostorys. For example we could have added music, using the composer tool for this meaning it would be entirely our own piece of music that we created. There were also slide transitions that we had available to use to make the transition between slides a lot less plain.

The completed photostory looks similar to a powerpoint production. Using photostory is another way to create an entirely unique piece of work, because you can you own pictures of anything and collaborate them to make your own photostory. Another very thing to note when making your photostory is that you have a database of photos that can be accessed on the internet, and as long as you follow the correct referencing instructions for the pictures you are free to use them.

In the second session we had the chance to make a movie using iMovie. We were split into small group and were given the chance to go outside and collect any video clips that we wanted to use in our movie. After we had collected our footage we then uploadedb this onto the computer. We were able to sort the clips into the ones that we wanted and didn't require. It was demonstrated in front of the class how to actually break up each segment of film into the more desirable sections. For example if you didn't like a three second segment because it happened to be fuzzy then you could delete that segment. This is a very good tool to have too ensure that eliminate any unwanted footage from your movie.

Other ways we were shown how to edit our movie were by adding in credits, sound effect, and a variety of other things too. The finished product of the movie is a very polished, well-edited film clip.

So far I have learnt how to create both a photostory and an iMovie, to a standard which they could then be presented to a group of students. I feel that both the photostory and the iMovie could be used in the classroom. The students could relate these to work that they are doing in class ir they could be introduced as a special unit on their own. These two activities provide an opportunity for student to get creative and they can express themselves freely, with however they decide to edit their photostory or iMovie. It applies to the classroom in that the technology being used in today's society is always advancing, and preparing students with the skills to operate these systems is going to give them some skills that will no doubt be essential later on in life.

To sum up the first two sessions, I have learnt how to create a photostory and an iMovie as well. Both of these could be brought into the classroom for the students to get a chance to experience working with the technology, and also to have a chance to get creative and perhaps relate these two activities to what os happening in the classroom. I feel that these are an excellent things to have access to in the classroom.
